definition of culture

What is the correct culture definition?

Culture encompasses the social behaviors, institutions, and norms found in human societies, along with the knowledge, beliefs, arts, laws, customs, abilities, and habits of individuals within these groups. Often tied to specific regions, culture is passed down through enculturation and socialization, leading to diverse cultural expressions across societies.

A cultural norm defines acceptable behavior within a society, guiding actions, dress, language, and demeanor, and setting expectations within a social group. Relying solely on a monoculture can be risky, as it may lack the flexibility to adapt to environmental changes, similar to the vulnerability of a single species. For instance, in military culture, valor is typical, and virtues like duty, honor, and loyalty are functional responses to conflict. Similar traits can be observed in religious practices within social groups.

Cultural change, or repositioning, involves reconstructing a society's cultural concepts. Internally, cultures are influenced by forces that both promote and resist change, while externally, they are shaped through interactions with other societies.
